Walmart Giving in Last Fiscal Year Exceeds $5.5 million in New Jersey
"Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are very pleased to be supporting so many wonderful organizations in New Jersey and are committed to helping those in need in the communities where we serve," said William C. Wertz, director of communications, Walmart. "Walmart strongly believes in giving back locally and we're excited to watch these great organizations find new ways to positively impact lives."
Additionally, since announcing the historic Fighting Hunger Together commitment in 2010 to donate 1.1 billion pounds of food and $250 million in cash by 2015, Walmart and Sam's Club facilities have surpassed both goals one year earlier than projected. As of January 2014, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have donated 1.58 billion pounds of food, the equivalent of approximately 1.32 billion meals, and have awarded $260 million in grants to hunger relief programs in the United States, exceeding their original commitment by four percent. Overall, Walmart has exceeded $2 billion of cash and in-kind commitments to fight hunger at the local, state and national levels.
In New Jersey, Walmart donated 2,045,180 pounds of food to local food banks - nearly 1,704,317 meals in the last fiscal year. The Foundation worked with the Food Bank of South Jersey in the state of New Jersey to provide the mobile food truck, which will be used to deliver fresh produce to communities with limited access to supermarkets and food pantries throughout Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties.
"In a region that has more than 28 USDA described food deserts and an organization that has just about exhausted its transportation resources to get food to those in need, this wonderful and timely gift of a truck from Walmart is yet another example of their commitment to help us combat hunger in New Jersey," says Val Traore, CEO of the Food Bank of South Jersey. "Walmart truly understands the challenges we face and they respond with resources that really help us advance our mission. We are truly grateful to have them as our supporters."
