Walmart To Add 50,000 Seasonal Jobs

Finally, some good news for the economy, even though it is temporary. According to Walmart Stores Inc., the company expects to hire more than 50,000 seasonal employees this holiday season and will be offering more hours to its existing employees.

Walmart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, based in Bentonville, Ark., said that this year's holiday season hiring numbers will be up slightly over last year, although they did not give a precise figure for increase.

The mass retail discount chain operates more than 4,000 stores in the U.S. and employs about 1.4 million people nationwide. They are the nation's largest private employer.

Market analysts study the holiday seasonal hiring figures from many mass retail outlets, including Walmart, to help gain insight into the overall employment trends and sales expectations for the holiday season.

The holiday season is the most important part of a retailers' year, typically making up a significant portion of the overall annual sales.

Walmart typically begins to hire for the holidays in mid-September and ramps up hiring in mid-October.
