Doug McMillon, Walmart’s CEO, had everyone scratching their heads recently after his repeated statements referring to the behemoth retailer as a “technology company”.
This obviously needed further clarification, since it is obvious to anyone that Walmart certainly isn’t Microsoft or Google. So what gives with this statement?
Well, it all boils down to partners and investments. Walmart has recently partnered with both Microsoft and Google, for cloud computing and voice activated shopping technologies, respectively. It has also made a number of acquisitions and investments to elevate its E-commerce platform, along with investments in in-store automation that will eventually enhance operations efficiency within its nearly 5,000 stores.
