Most retailers see a huge increase in business in November and December of each year. For the brick and mortar retailers, this typically brings with it the need to hire additional seasonal employees. Walmart has done this in the past, but this year they have no plans to ramp up their store staff during the holidays. Instead, Walmart plans to offer their existing 1.5 million employees the opportunity to earn some additional holiday cash by working more hours.
By offering additional hours to existing employees, Walmart is able to avoid the resources necessary to train temporary workers, while also boosting morale for its employees. According to Walmart, the extra hours are there for those employees who choose to work, but there are no requirements for employees to take on additional work hours.
